Senior Primary / Junior Secondary (P5 or above):: Spark Curiosity
• Explore the cultural, ecological and scientific significance of natural indigo dyeing
• Foster interest in STEAM learning and scientific inquiry
• Experience the creative process of natural dyeing and artistic expression
• Create a naturally dyed artwork inspired by themes such as Human–Nature Harmony or Sustainable Development
Senior Secondary (S5 Chemistry): Deepen Understanding
• Use natural indigo dyeing as a context to deepen understanding of redox reactions, organic chemistry and chemical bonding
• Investigate how factors such as pH and temperature influence dyeing outcomes
• Experience an interdisciplinary learning journey that integrates science, culture and art
Learning Outcomes
• Observe Chinese Indigo in its natural habitat; understand its plant features, ecological role, and the cultural history of indigo dye
• Hands-on extraction and dyeing with natural indigo
- P4-S3: operation and observation
- S4 or above: scientific principles including redox, pH and temperature effects
• Reflect on the cultural and communal significance of natural dye; summarise learning through artistic creation
• Junior students act as curators and exhibit their works at school and the Countryside Eco-Festival
